MEETING OF THE PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF AGRARIAN SCIENCES OF UKRAINE
The issue of breeding improvement of nutritional characteristics of field crops was considered at a meeting of the Presidential Office of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine on December 17, 2024. The meeting was chaired by the NAAS President, Academician Yaroslav HADZALO, who noted the importance and multifaceted nature of the challenge of improving the quality of plant products, focusing on the significance of scientific developments of the NAAS institutions in its solution.
The Acting Director of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS, Oleh LEONOV, gave a talk and highlighted the directions of creating varieties and hybrids of field crops with unique properties for agricultural production, defining quality indicators that most significantly affect the consumer characteristics of final products. Results of fundamental studies aimed at theoretical justification of breeding for quality and creation of starting materials were analyzed. He noted that NAAS institutions are implementing breeding programs to create varieties of field crops, both for traditional and special purposes for healthy food production. Varieties and hybrids of cereals, grain legumes and oilseeds with improved nutritional characteristics were presented; their cultivation will ensure the required quantity and quality of raw materials for the production of healthy foods, including baby and dietary ones.
Members of the Presidium and invited guests, including Nataliia KOZUB, the Head of the Laboratory of Ecological Plant Genetics and Biotechnology of the Institute of Plant Protection of NAAS; Antonina SKLIARENKO, the President of the Community of Legume Producers and Consumers of Ukraine; Liubomyr KHOMICHAK, the Director of the Institute of Food Resources of NAAS; Svitlana OLIINIK, Professor of the Department of Bread and Confectionery Technologies of the State Biotechnological University; Iryna PRAVZDIVA, the Head of the Grain Quality Laboratory of the V.M. Remeslo Myronivka Wheat Institute of NAAS; Viacheslav SICHKAR, the Acting Head of the Department of Legume Breeding, Genetics and Seed Production of the Plant Breeding and Genetic Institute - National Center of Seed and Cultivar Investigations; Vladyslav CHERCHEL, the Director of the Institute of Grain Crops of NAAS; and Ivan HLIAN, the General Director of the private enterprise AgroGLIAN participated in the discussion.
