MEETING OF THE PRESIDIUM OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF AGRARIAN SCIENCES OF UKRAINE

On March 1, 2023, at a meeting of the presidium of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, the issue "Formation and Preservation of the National Plant Gene Bank of Ukraine" was raised.

In his talk, Viktor Kuzmovych Riabchun, Deputy Director for Research on Plant Genetic Resources of the Plant Production Institute named after V.Ya. Yuriev of NAAS, focused on mainstreams in the formation of collection at the National Plant Gene Bank, selection of sources and donors of valuable traits, and provision users (breeders, scientists, teachers, postgraduate students, etc) with them. Today, the preservation of this wealth of Ukraine requires organizing duplicate storage facilities in other regions of Ukraine, which is carried out with the FAO’s support. Discussing the issue, scientists and breeders highlighted the importance of National Plant Gene Bank functioning in Ukraine and of comprehensive cooperation with the FAO Commission on Genetic Resources, International Centers for Agricultural Research, regional and national plant gene banks of the leading countries worldwide.

At the end of the report, information (with photos) about the damage to the material and technical bases of the Plant Production Institute named after V.Ya. Yuriev of NAAS was presented.
