MEETING OF THE COORDINATION AND METHODOLOGICAL COUNCIL ON RESEARCH PROGRAM 16 "SUNFLOWER: BASICS OF PRODUCTION PROCESS MANAGEMENT"
On July 19, 2023, a meeting of the Coordinating and Methodological Council on NAAS research program 16 "Sunflower: Basics of Production Process Management" was held (the main institution is the Plant Production Institute named after V.Ya. Yuriev of NAAS). Supervisors and responsible executors of the program projects from seven NAAS research institutions were present, 14 participants in total. The meeting was started by the Program Head, NAAS Academician, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Viktor KYRYCHENKO. At the meeting, Aliona ILCHENKO, Researcher of the Hybrid Sunflower Breeding and Seed Production Department of PBGI- NCSCI, Doctor of Philosophy, gave the talk "Sunflower Breeding for Resistance to Post-Emergence Herbicides in the South of Ukraine".
Participants of the meeting discussed, clarified and approved the reports for the first half of 2023: 14 reports in total, of which 3 were on fundamental studies, and 11 - on applied ones. Major results within the program in the first half of 2023: donors with high content of oleic acid in oil (21 accessions) and self-pollinating lines with high combining ability (15 lines) were selected; sources of resistance to downy mildew race 730 were identified (19 accessions); in greenhouse conditions, 708 accessions were tested for resistance to virulent broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr) races and sources of resistance to the parasite were identified (9 sources).
For the conditions of the steppe, forest-steppe, and woodlands, effective measures to manage production processes in sunflower were defined: application of mineral fertilizers, microfertilizers, plant growth regulators, sulfonylurea herbicides, and tillage modes. Effects of a complex of farming techniques on vegetation length, pathogens- and broomrape-induced damage, yield and its constituents in 25 Ukrainian F1 hybrids and eight parental lines of hybrids were determined. Basic information on influence of components of five adaptive technologies of sunflower cultivation on parameters of vegetative and generative development of plants was gained. In 2023, one hybrid and two parents of hybrids were included in the State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Dissemination in Ukraine.
