TRAINING “INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT FOR CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES – OPPORTUNITIES FOR UKRAINE”

From April 16 to 18, 2025, employees of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS took part in the training “International Support for Conservation and Development of Plant Genetic Resources – Opportunities for Ukraine”, which was organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and supported by an EU Project (the beneficiary of this project is the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine).

At the training, the talks were given by Viktor Kuzmych Riabchun, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Deputy Director for Research on Plant Genetic Resources; Nataliia Vasylivna Kuzmyshyna, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Head of the Laboratory of Introduction and Preservation of Plant Genetic Resources; Kseniia Ivanivna Dokukina, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Researcher of the Laboratory of Introduction and Preservation of Plant Genetic Resources; Tryhub Oleh Volodymyrovych, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Acting Deputy Director for Research of Ustymivka Experimental Station of the Institute.

From the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS, the following researchers took part in the off-line event: Bezuhla Olha Mykolaivna, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Head of the Laboratory of Genetic Resources of Cereals, Grain Legumes and Groats Crops; Usova Nina Oleksandrivna, Junior Researcher of the Laboratory of Immunity, Biotechnology and Quality; Usova Anastasiia Oleksandrivna, Junior Researcher of the Laboratory of Immunity, Biotechnology and Quality. The on-line training was attended by Riabchun Nataliia Ivanivna, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Chief Researcher of the Laboratory of Wheat Breeding; Usova Zoia Vasylivna, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Head of the Laboratory of Immunity, Biotechnology and Quality; Bohuslavskyi Roman Lvovych, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Leading Researcher of the Laboratory of Introduction and Preservation of Plant Genetic Resources.

The training covered the following main issues:

  • International organizations, programs and funds that support the preservation and development of plant genetic resources and have offices in Ukraine.
  • Participation in international programs and grant experience of NAAS research institutions involved in the Plant Genetic Resources System of Ukraine.
  • Successful experience of Ukrainian institutes and scientists in attracting and implementing grants.
  • Preparation and implementation of grant projects - theory and practice.
  • Grant projects as a basis for implementing the Strategy for the Development of the Plant Genetic Resources System for 2024-2028.

The speakers - representatives of international and domestic organizations, scientific institutions, and funds - provided valuable information on finding sources and ways to attract grants, experience of their successful use and other related issues. This is especially important in the conditions of wartime and reconstruction of Ukraine when the basic funding of research institutions is extremely insufficient.
