Round Table Dedicated to the 125th Anniversary of the Birth of Eminent Scientist Mykola Yosypovych Melnykov

On December 18, 2025, the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS hosted a Round Table dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mykola Melnykov, a distinguished Ukrainian biochemist and specialist in grain quality technologies. A Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Melnykov was the founder and long-standing head (1933–1973) of the Grain Quality Laboratory at the Yuriev Plant Production Institute.

The event featured a presentation by V. Ozherelieva, Candidate of Historical Silences, on the life and creative path of the scientist. Z. Usova, Head of the Laboratory of Immunity, Biotechnology, and Quality, outlined the historical aspects and current directions of research on crop grain quality at the Institute.

The meeting was attended by staff and guests of the Institute. Scientific discussions included contributions from Yu. Ohurtsov, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, and researchers S. Voloshyna, L. Makhnova, and others. The participants showed particular interest in the technological equipment developed and implemented by M. Melnykov, which is still utilized in the Laboratory’s research today, such as a grain cutter for determining vitreousness, a micro-press for test pasta making, and a device for measuring loaf volume.

Melnykov’s scientific legacy comprises more than 60 papers on milling and bread-making qualities and several patents for inventions and analytical methods. His research remains widely applied in breeding practices at the Yuriev Plant Production Institute and other institutions. His methodological developments and instruments have not only retained their relevance but continue to evolve as part of current research.

To mark his 125th anniversary, a bibliographic index of Melnykov’s scientific papers has been prepared for publication as part of the "Scientists of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS" series, highlighting the key stages of his contribution to biochemistry and grain quality technologies.
