Round table dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding ukrainian scientist, candidate of agricultural sciences Volf Viktor Hryhorovych
On October 24, 2024, the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS held a round table dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding Ukrainian scientist in breeding theory and mathematical approaches in plant breeding and genetics, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Head of the Oilseeds Laboratory of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS, VOLF Viktor Hryhorovych. The Institute’s employees and Viktor Hryhorovych's granddaughter Iryna Vitaliivna attended the event.
Candidate of Historical Sciences V.M. Ozherelieva told about the scientist’s life and creative path; NAAS Academician V.V. Kyrychenko reported about the development of sunflower genetics and breeding and V.H. Volf’s contribution to this development; Doctor of Agricultural Sciences V.P. Kolomatska gave a talk on the history of the foundation and conduct of an advanced training course for scientists on the application of mathematical methods in genetic and breeding. Doctor of Agricultural Sciences N.I. Vasko, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences M.R. Kozachenko, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences S.H.Ponurenko participated in the discussion.
The scientist formed the foundations for field experimentation theory, mathematical and informational support of plant genetic and breeding studies. V.H. Volf's great merit consists in the theoretical justification and development of methods for creating genetic systems in self-pollinated sunflower lines as well as the development of methods for assessing the combining ability of lines and selecting pairs for crossing in heterotic sunflower breeding. The scientist conducted his scientific research for almost 50 years at the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS of Ukraine. V.H. Volf’s scientific achievements and scientific school are well known both in Ukraine and abroad.
