Round table "Prospects of millet in ukraine"

On March 12, 2024, at the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS, a round table "Prospects of Millet in Ukraine" was held.

The event was attended by scientists of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute, NSC Institute of Agriculture, Ustymivka Experimental Station of Plant Production of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute, Poltava State Agrarian University, and Dmytro Motornyi Tavria State Agrotechnological University. Academician Volodymyr KHAREBA, Deputy Academician-Secretary of the Plant Production Department of NAAS participated in the round table

The event was moderated by Head of the Laboratory of Millet Breeding of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Svitlana HORBACHOVA. She gave a talk highlighting the importance and value of growing millet in Ukraine and worldwide. The topics and directions of scientific research at the Yuriev Plant Production Institute, characteristics and advantages of created varieties were covered. Special attention is paid to studies and introduction of new waxy varieties, grain/fodder varieties, and short-season varieties. Researcher Viktoriia VORONTSOVA gave a talk on the basic collection of millet of Ustymivka Station of Plant Production.

The following researchers took an active part in the discussion: Head of the Laboratory of Millet Breeding and Seed Production of the NSC Institute of Agriculture, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Anatolii PRODANYK; Deputy Director for Research of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Valeriia KOLOMATSKA; Professor of the Department of Operation and Technical Service of Machines of the Dmytro Motornyi Tavria State Agro-Technological University, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Corresponding Member of NAAS Volodymyr NADYKTO; Head of the Plant Production Department of Poltava State Agrarian University, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Volodymyr HANHUR.

The participants of the round table raised the following issues:

- Control over compliance with intellectual property rights on millet varieties and prevention of counterfeiting by seed producers and illegal use of patented breeding achievements;

- Advertising and market promotion of innovative millet varieties, in particular with increased grain quality;

- Use of outdated breeding and laboratory pieces of equipment and the need to update them;

- Need to strengthen breeding for manufacturability of millet varieties;

- Comprehensiveness in research to create innovative products in collaboration with specialists in related fields.

The participants of the event initiated solving the challenges by contacting the NAAS, strengthening some breeding trends, and organizing joint studies.
