TOUR FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS OF THE O.M. BEKETOV HOUSING AND COMMUNAL PROFESSIONAL COLLEGE
On June 5, 2024, scientists of the Yuriev Plant Production Institute of NAAS organized and conducted an online tour for teachers and students of of the O.M. Beketov Housing and Communal Professional College (Kharkiv, specialties "Horticulture" and "Agronomy"). Head of the Laboratory of Introduction and Preservation of Plant Genetic Resources, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Nataliia Kuzmyshina gave a talk "Formation of the National Gene Bank of Plants of Ukraine", where she familiarized the audience with the methodological basics and results of the management of the National Gene Bank of Plants of Ukraine. Senior Researcher Yuliia Chernobai, Ph.D., and Researcher Tetiana Shyianova gave a talk "Exsitu Storage of Collection Accessions." Information was presented on the stages of preparation of seed specimens for long-term storage and seed monitoring in the National Depository. Plant genetic resources play an important role in ensuring the food, economic, ecological and social safeties of each individual country and of mankind as a whole. The global experience has proven that the creation and management of gene banks, which concentrate samples of genera, species, and forms of domestic plants and their wild relatives - carriers of genes and loci for useful traits and characteristics, are the most effective way of preserving, enriching and using plant genetic resources. The National Gene Bank of Ukraine is one of the ten largest banks in the world in terms of the amount and diversity of specimens.
