FIELD DAY 2022 "INNOVATIVE DOMESTIC VARIETAL RESOURCE OF SPIKED CEREALS"

On July 8, 2022, Valeriia Kolomatska, Deputy Director for Science; Viktor Riabchun, Deputy Director for Research into Plant Genetic Resources; and Oleh Leonov, Head of the Laboratory of Wheat Breeding and Physiology, participated in the Field Day "Innovative Domestic Varietal Resource of Spiked Cereals" held by the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine at the Exhibition and Innovation Center of NAAS.

At the event, NAAS President, Academician Yaroslav Hadzalo, made an opening speech, noting that the use of domestic breeding innovations is of particular importance for the agriculture of Ukraine in the conditions of military aggression by the Russian Federation. The varietal resource of spiked cereals bred by NAAS research institutions is noticeable for a wide assortment of cultivars and hybrids with high adaptability to growing conditions, which makes it possible to obtain high yields and grain quality. Despite the harsh working conditions, the NAAS institutions will provide agrarians with high-quality seeds of spiked cereals for the 2023 harvest.

People's Deputy of Ukraine Anatolii Hunko greeted the Field Day participants, highlighted the importance of the scientific activities of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine aimed at ensuring sustainable agrarian production in the country, and expressed his support for the NAAS scientists.

During the demonstration of spiked cereal varieties, representatives of the following research institutions of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine presented their breeding achievements (winter rye cultivars and hybrids; winter wheat, winter barley, winter triticale, spring wheat, spring barley, spring triticale, and oat cultivars): Plant Production Institute (PPI) named after V.Ya. Yuriev of NAAS, Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute - National Center of Seed and Cultivar Investigation, VM Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat of NAAS, NSC "Institute of Agriculture", Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of NAAS, Institute of Fodder and Agriculture of the Podillia of NAAS, Bila Tserkva Experimental Breeding Station of the Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet of NAAS, Ivanivka Experimental Breeding Station of the Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet of NAAS, Verkhniachka Experimental Breeding Station of the Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet of NAAS, and Nosivka Experimental Breeding Station of VM Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat of NAAS.

Head of the Laboratory of Wheat Breeding and Physiology, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Oleh Leonov, presented winter wheat cultivars bred by the PPI NAAS, characterizing their genetic potential and cultivation peculiarities; in addition, he gave characteristics of winter rye cultivars and hybrids. Deputy Director for Research into Plant Genetic Resources, Candidate of Biological Sciences Viktor Riabchun, presented the winter and spring triticale breeding achievements of the Plant Production Institute named after V.Ya. Yuriev of NAAS. Currently, the Institute has completed the quality check of winter crop seeds harvested in previous years, which have already been offered to agrarians for purchase.

At the event, drone aircrafts used in agronomy for diagnosing field conditions and treating crops were also presented.
