Laboratory of Genetic Resources of Cereals

History of the unit:

Work with the genetic resources of wheat, rye and barley began in the early days of Kharkiv Agricultural Station, the first director of which was P.V. Budrin, in 1909. In the first years, the staff’s research activities were aimed at collecting local accessions of cereals and acquiring foreign material for further studies and use in breeding. Starting material was supplemented from V.Ya. Yuriev’s personal collections during missions around Ukraine, as well as in Belgorod, Kursk and other provinces. Cereal collections at the Station were significantly enriched after the transfer of accessions from the disbanded in 1934 Ukrainian Station of the All-Union Research Institute of Plant Breeding (Lytvynivka village, Kharkiv region), which was organized by M.I. Vavilov with M.M. Kulishov. Since 1956, the genetic resources of cereals were explored in the Laboratory of Plant Resources under guidance of Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor L.M. Delone, as part of the Department of Agroecology and Plant Resources headed by Academician M.M. Kuleshov.

On the initiative of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences on the basis of the Plant Production Institute named after V.Ya. Yuriev, the scientific and technical program "Plant Genetic Resources" was started in 1992. In 1993, the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine (NCPGRU) was organized. The Center guides and coordinated scientific and methodological work on the formation and maintenance of the National Gene Bank of Plants of Ukraine. The NCPGRU is headed by VK Riabchun, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Senior Researcher. The purpose of studying collections is the most complete biological, genetic and environmental characterization, determination of ways of its use in breeding and research programs, formation of collections of the gene bank. The collection of genetic resources of cereals includes 20,815 accessions of cereals, including 6,052 winter bread wheat accessions, 3,103 spring bread wheat accessions, 219 winter durum wheat accessions, 1,317 spring durum wheat accessions, 1,015 accessions of underutilized and wild wheat and barley species, 1,920 winter triticale accessions, 2,021 spring triticale accessions, 365 accessions of winter, spring and perennial rye, and 4,804 spring barley accessions.

Research avenues

  • Enrichment of the National Gene Bank with new Ukrainian and foreign accessions;
  • Comprehensive studies of the Bank’s accession diversity by field, laboratory and other methods to build up collections, identify sources and donors of valuable economic characteristics and to provide breeding, research and educational institutions as well as agrarian enterprises with such accessions;
  • Preservation of the plant diversity in viable condition, preparation and transfer of seeds of collection accessions for long-term storage to the National Repository and their regeneration;
  • Creation and maintenance of the computer information system "Plant Gene Pool" and related databases;
  • Registration of valuable accessions and collections of the plant gene pool in Ukraine;
  • Cooperation with foreign research centers (Turkish branch of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), gene banks of the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Belarus).

The staff of the Laboratory of Plant Genetic Resources has formed the following gene pool collections:


Basic collections:

- A basic collection of winter bread wheat (Certificate 68 dated 30/10/2009); the collection includes 5,079 accessions from 56 countries, representing the genetic diversity of 29 traits and 144 levels of their expression.

- A basic collection of spring durum wheat, consisting of 1,023 accessions from 47 countries; the collection reflects the diversity of 14 traits and 72 levels of their expression (Certificate 12 dated 17/11/05).

- A basic collection of spring bread wheat (Certificate 67 dated 30/11/09); the collection consists of 2,738 accessions from 70 countries, representing the diversity of 26 traits and 109 levels of their expression.

- A basic collection of spring barley (Certificate 289 dated 23/01/2020); the collection includes 4,792 accessions from 69 countries, reflecting the diversity of 22 traits and 102 levels of expressions.

 

Genetic collections:

- A genetic collection of winter bread wheat for resistance to diseases and pests (Certificate 183 dated 11/12/2014); the collection includes 517 accessions with identified genes of 13 traits and 152 levels of their expression.

-A genetic collection of spring barley for resistance to diseases (Certificate 210 dated 25/12/2015); the collection includes 315 accessions belonging to 11 varieties from 25 countries.

-A genetic collection of spring triticale; the collection includes 235 accessions with known genetic control of 26 traits and 57 their levels (Request 421 dated 12/10/2017).

 

Trait collections:

- A trait collection of winter bread wheat for winter hardiness and frost tolerance in combination with other valuable economic characteristics; the collection was built up in cooperation  with Ustymivka Research Station (Certificate 9 dated 17/11/05); it includes 115 accessions, the genetic diversity of which is represented by 7 traits and 21 levels their expression.

- A trait collection of winter bread wheat for resistance to diseases and intrastem pests (Certificate 38 dated 11/03/2007); the collection consists of 318 accessions from 23 countries, representing the genetic diversity in resistance to smut, leaf diseases and intrastem pests differentiated by 5 traits and 40 levels of their expression.

- A trait collection of winter bread wheat for grain quality (Certificate 118 dated 01/11/2011); the collection includes 864 accessions from 20 countries, reflecting the range of fluctuations in the grain quality; the accessions have other valuable economic characteristics, the genetic diversity of which is represented by 24 traits and 120 levels of their expressions.

- A trait collection of winter bread wheat for valuable economic characteristics (Certificate 148 dated 04/03/2013); the collection includes 347 accessions from 24 countries, reflecting the diversity of winter bread wheat by expression 21 economic features (Certificate 148 dated 04/03/2013).

- A trait collection of winter bread wheat by distinctiveness traits (Certificate 181 dated 11/12/2014); the collection includes 3152 accessions with 41 distinctiveness traits, reflecting the diversity of the accessions by 94 trait gradations (wax coating, grain color, bush shape, plant height etc.).

- A trait collection of winter bread wheat for confectionery properties (winter soft bread wheat) (Certificate 235 dated 12/02/16); the collection includes 69 accessions from 14 countries, reflecting the variability of winter bread wheat by 27 traits and 108 levels of their expression.

-A trait collection of spring bread wheat for technological and bread-making qualities (Certificate 26 dated 5/01/07); the collection consists of 156 accessions 11 countries, reflecting the variability range of spring bread wheat by 8 grain quality traits and other economically valuable characteristics with 31 gradations;

-A trait collection of spring bread wheat for resistance to diseases and intrastem pests (Certificate 39 dated 11/03/07); the collection consists of 182 accessions from 25 countries, reflecting the genetic diversity by 6 traits (resistance to smut, leaf diseases and intrastem pests) with 47 levels of their expression.

- A trait collection of spring bread wheat for economic characteristics (Certificate 147 dated 13/02/2013); the collection includes 158 accessions from 13 countries, reflecting the diversity of spring bread wheat by 18 economic characteristics with 83 gradations.

- A trait collection of winter durum wheat for economic characteristics (Certificate 182 dated 09/12/2014); the collection includes 47 accessions from 9 countries and is differentiated by 65 expression levels of 14 traits.

- A trait collection of spring durum wheat for resistance to diseases and intrastem pests; the collection was built up in cooperation with the Laboratory of Plant Resistance to Bio- and Abiotic Environmental Factors (Certificate 36 dated 11/03/07) and consists of 92 accessions from 10 countries, representing 6 traits and 54 gradations.

- A trait collection of spring durum wheat for economic characteristics (Certificate 232 dated 20/08/15); the collection consists of 108 accessions from 11 countries, reflecting the variability range of durum wheat by 10 valuable economic characteristics and 49 levels of their expression.

- A trait collection of winter rye for valuable economic characteristics, which includes 51 accessions differentiated by 19 traits and 92 expression levels (Certificate 180 dated 11/12/2014).

- A trait collection of winter rye for distinctiveness traits; the collection includes 65 accessions differentiated by 31 traits and 146 expressions levels (Certificate 269 dated 07/12/2018).

- A trait collection of winter triticale for distinctiveness traits (Certificate 146 dated 13/02/2013); the collection includes 146 accessions from 15 countries, with 36 traits and 158 levels of their expression.

- A trait collection of winter triticale for valuable economic characteristics (Certificate 203 dated 13/02/2013); the collection includes 95 accessions from 8 countries, with 15 traits and 72 levels of their expression.

- A trait collection of winter triticale by cultivation technologies (Certificate 234 dated 12/02/16); the collection includes 40 accessions from 7 countries, reflecting the variability range of winter triticale by 15 traits.

- A trait collection of winter triticale for bread-making qualities; built up in co-authorship with the Laboratory of Genetics, Biotechnology and Quality (Certificate 257 dated 08/11/2017); the collection includes 65 accessions from 6 countries with 124 gradations of traits.

- A trait collection of spring barley for economic characteristics (Certificate 128 dated 30/12/2011); the collection includes 58 accessions from 15 countries, reflecting the diversity of barley by expression of economic characteristics (yield, 1000-grain weight, resistance to pathogens, etc.).

- A trait collection of spring barley for distinctiveness traits (Certificate 256 dated 08/11/2017); the collection includes 446 accessions belonging to 20 varieties from 28 countries, reflecting the variability range of spring barley by 43 traits and 158 levels of their expression.

- A trait collection of spring groats barley (Certificate 263 dated 04/06/2018); the collection includes 140 spring barley accessions from 11 countries; the traits are graded by 75 expression levels.

 - A trait collection of  spring durum wheat for pasta qualities (Certificate 301 dated 14/12/2020); the collection includes 55 accessions from 9 countries, reflecting their diversity by 18 traits and 90 expression levels.

Core collection:

- A core collection of spring durum wheat (Certificate 74 dated 16/11/2009); the collection comprises 507 accessions belonging to 31 varieties from 45 countries; the collection is formed by 10 traits with 26 expression levels.

Special collections:

- A special trait collection of winter triticale for winter hardiness, the collection was built up in co-authorship with the Laboratory of Winter Wheat Breeding and Physiology (Certificate 88 dated 10/11/2010) and includes 110 accessions from 9 countries, with 11 traits and 52 expression levels.

- A special trait collection of winter rye for winter hardiness (Certificate 209 dated 24/12/2015); the collection includes 55 accessions differentiated by 9 traits and 27 levels of their expression.

Training collections:

- A training collection of spring barley (Certificate 24 dated 5/12/06), which consists of 47 accessions from 15 countries, representing the genetic diversity of the gene pool of 19 spring barley varieties for educational purposes.

- A training collection of durum wheat, which consists of 82 accessions, which are the most valuable due to their morphological and economical features (Certificate 13 dated November 17, 2005); the collection reflects 3 traits with 15 gradations.

- A training collection of spring bread wheat (Certificate 56 dated 23/12/08); the collection consists of 90 accessions belonging to 25 varieties from 16 countries, reflecting the diversity of the gene pool by 9 traits.

A trait database of valuable economic and morphological features of wheat gene pool accessions has been registered. The database covers the entire cycle of growth and development of wheat plants and consists of tables and boxes grouped by economic, biological, morphological and statistical parameters. The database makes targeted selection of starting material for breeding, scientific and educational programs possible (Copyright registration certificate 47294 dated 21/01/2013).

Based on the results of multi-year work, “Database of Disease Resistance Genes of Spring Barley Accessions” has been formed. This database contains information on the presence of resistance genes to powdery mildew, dwarf leaf rust, rhynchosporium leaf spot, and loose smut in the accessions; their location in chromosomes; levels of their expression known from literature and field assessments; the results database also contains multi-year data on valuable economic characteristics (Copyright registration certificate 86870 dated 15/03/2019).
