Laboratory of Genetic Resources of Grain Legumes and Groats Crops

History of the unit:

Laboratory of Genetic Resources of Grain Legumes and Groats Crops was established in 1991. Currently, the gene pool of 5 legumes (pea, soybean, bean, chickpea, and lentil) is formed and studied. Outstanding scientists S.M. Fridental (pea), P.M. Chekryhin (pea), A.M. Shevchenko (pea, chickpea, lentil), P.P. Bordakov (soybean), V.B. Yenken (soybean), Ye.I. Ropoport (bean), L.I. Polianska (bean), N.I. Shevchenko (bean), P.V. Budrin (millet), and S.I. Konstantinov (millet) contributed to the Laboratory’s evolvement.

Studies of the collection millet was started at Kharkiv Breeding Station by Professor P.V. Budrin in 1912. Initially, breeding was based on local varieties-populations, and only in 1945 the Station first received 600 accessions from of the world collection of the All-Union Research Institute of Plant Breeding. Work with the soybean collection at the former Kharkiv State Breeding Station was launched from 1928 to 1935 under P.P. Bordakov’s guidance. At that time in Ukraine, soybean was used as an oil crop, therefore the grain rend in breeding was predominant. The collected material, about 100 accessions, was mainly from Manchuria and the North Caucasus. The bean collection was started in 1934. At that time, Kharkiv Breeding Station already had a collection of about 1,500 accessions. Almost half of this collection were original samples of Ukrainian landraces. The pea collection and breeding was started in 1944 under the leadership of the Candidate of Agricultural Sciences S.M. Fridental. In a short time, the collection was done; it contained almost 500 accessions, mainly local late-ripening forms of field pea. The first collection accessions of chickpea and lentil were obtained after the establishment of the NCPGRU in 1992 from the working collection of Luhansk Regional Agricultural Station.

Research avenues

  • Search and introduction of domestic and foreign breeding varieties, valuable genetic and breeding lines, local varieties-populations, wild relatives.
  • Evaluation of the gene pool of grain legumes for valuable economic characteristics and, on this basis, creation of basic, trait, genetic, special, educational and other collections.
  • Search for effective sources and donors of valuable economic characteristics traits and identification of genes that control them.
  • Preservation of accessions in viable condition and genetic stability.
  • Certification of accessions, creation of information databases: passport, trait, meteorological, pedigree databases.
  • Provision of breeding, research and educational institutions, farms and private enterprises with the gene pool accessions.

  • Environmental studies the gene pool of grain legumes jointly with leading breeders of Ukraine and other countries;
  • Expert evaluation, registration and preservation of original breeding lines of grain legumes in the NCPGRU.
