Laboratory of Barley Breeding and Genetics

History of the unit:

The date of foundation of the Laboratory is considered to be 1910 - the barley breeding start date in Ukraine at the only existing at that time breeding department of Kharkiv Breeding Station. Since 1932, barley breeding had been in Laboratory for Spring Cereal breeding; in 1965 an independent laboratory for barley breeding was established. Over 100 years, the spring barley breeding in the Laboratory has gone through several stages - from mass and individual selections from local material to modern methods. Remote hybridization, haploid production by bulbosum method, in vitro anther culture, intergeneric crossing, polyploidy, and experimental mutagenesis were used to create starting material. Intervariety intraspecies hybridization remains the main method of obtaining starting material for spring barley breeding. Since the Laboratory was founded, 50 varieties of spring grain and brewing barley have been created and included in the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine.

Research avenues

Evaluation of the efficiency and improvement of methods for creating spring barley varieties.

Creation of new varieties for different purposes that would meet the requirements of modern production - grain feed, brewing, food varieties, including naked ones and varieties with altered composition of starch, suitable for the manufacture of dietary and baby foods. Expansion of the genetic diversity of barley by developing new forms; studies of genetic, physiological, and biochemical features. Increase in the adaptability of barley varieties to environmental conditions, including drought, salinization, in-spike germination, etc., by breeding methods.

Main scientific achievements

The priority of the Laboratory is to create spring barley varieties for various industries, namely, suitable for brewing (high-yielding, low protein and high extractability), for food production (high protein, rich in β-glucans abd tocols, with an amylopectin or amylose content in starch, naked varieties), for production of forages (high-yielding, high-protein). Much attention is paid to the creation of varieties resistant to pathogens of major diseases - smut, helminthosporiosis, fusarial rot, powdery mildew, etc..

Multi-year research has resulted in developments of over 50 spring barley, which were entered in the State Register, including the first in Ukraine awnless variety Modern and waxy variety variety Shedevr.
