Laboratory of Seed Production and Science
The first Laboratory of Seed Production and Science in the USSR was founded on the initiative of Academician VYa Yuriev in 1956. Later, in 1960, a department of seed production was established. The department directly participated in organizing the production and sale of eliteseeds and the first reproduction.
In parallel, the specialists of the Department of Seed Production in close cooperation with the Laboratory of Seed Science conducted research. Much attention in their research was paid to elucidating of causes of damage to seeds of field crops, not uniform quality of seeds and its importance in seed practice, heat resistance of seeds upon thermal disinfection, methods of pre-sowing preparation of seeds. The viability and longevity of cereal seeds during storage, depending on harvesting methods, post-harvest processing and storage conditions, as well as influence of agrotechnical measures on sowing qualities of seeds were also studied. Changes in yield and sowing qualities of seeds of different crops in the process of their reproduction were investigated to rationalize optimal timeframes of variety renewal. Technologies of accelerated reproduction of new varieties were developed, in particular shortened algorithms of elite seed production, sowing methods, fertilization, application of modern and ecologically safe plant growth regulators for seed crops of oat and buckwheat. Methods of accelerated reproduction of seeds of spiked cereals and sunflower using of plant growth regulators, biological agents, microfertilizers and pesticides were also developed.
In different periods, the Laboratory of Seed Production was headed by O.I. Bohdan, B.O. Vesna, L.V. Bondarenko, Yu.I. Buriak. The Laboratory of Seed Science was headed by I.H. Strona, V.H. Dindoroho, V.I. Kolisnyk, V.M. Tymchuk. In 2006, the Laboratories were merged into the Laboratory of Seed Production and Science under the leadership of Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Yu.I. Buriak. Since 2018, the head of the Laboratory has been Yu.Ye. Ohurtsov.

Research avenues
The Laboratory conducts research to increase yields, sowing and performance qualities of winter wheat, spring barley and sunflower, using modern plant growth regulators, biological agents and microfertilizers in combination with effective chemical protectors of plants and seeds, to find ways of seed sanitation, using chemical, biological and physical factors.

Proposals for scientific support/cooperation
The Laboratory serves as an advisory body on seed production and science in the region. In 2017 on the basis of the Laboratory, a testing laboratory of seed production and science was established and accredited by the National Accreditation Agency in Ukraine (Accreditation Certificate No 20479) in compliance with the State Standard of Ukraine DSTU ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (until June 5, 2022 it is the Testing Laboratory of Seed Production and Science). This laboratory evaluates sowing qualities of seeds of field crops grown in research units of the Institute and in other agricultural enterprises of Kharkivka Oblast. At the same time, causes of decline in sowing qualities are elucidated, and recommendations are issued to prevent or eliminate such phenomena.
