Kyrychenko Viktor Vasylovych

Scientist in the field of breeding and seed production of agricultural crops, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor, NAAS Academician (2007)

He was born on November 20, 1946 in the village of Mylaivka, Belovsky district, Kursk region.

In 1965, he graduated from Kucherov Agricultural College, received a diploma of agronomist with honors. He worked for an agricultural enterprise. 1965-1968 - service in the Soviet Army. After successful graduating, he received a diploma in "Scientist-Agronomist" in "Breeding and Seed Production" with honors.

In 1973-1976, he was a post-graduate student at the Ukrainian Research Institute of Plant Prodduction, Breeding and Genetics named after V.Ya. Yuriev of the Southern branch of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences named after V.I. Lenin. In 1979, he received a diploma of Candidate of Biological Sciences. After defending the thesis, he worked as a junior researcher and then as a researcher in the Laboratory of Spring Barley Breeding.

In 1980, he had a training course at research institutions in the GDR, specializing in "plant breeding for disease resistance", in particular: spring barley, winter wheat, winter rye breeding with basics of genetics, immunity, biotechnology and genetic resources.

In December 1980, he was appointed on a competitive basis to the position of senior researcher of the Laboratory of Sunflower Breeding of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Plant Production, Breeding and Genetics named after V.Ya. Yuriev (now - PPI nd. a. V.Ya. Yuriev NAAS). From 1991 to 2000, he headed the Breeding Department and the Laboratory of Sunflower Breeding, Genetics and Seed Production of the Institute.

In 2000, he headed the Plant Production Institute named after V.Ya. Yuriev of UAAS. In November 2002, he defended his doctoral thesis "Theoretical principles of Heterosis and its Practical Use in Sunflower" in the specialty "Plant Breeding" at the Institute of Grain Crops of UAAS.

In 2003, he was elected a UAAS corresponding member in the specialty "Plant Breeding". He received the academic title of professor in 2004. From 2004 to 2008, he was a member of the Expert Council of the High Attestation Commission of Ukraine.

Editor-in-Chief of the interdepartmental collection Selektsiia i Nasinnytstvo (Breeding and Seed Production), scientific journals Visnyk Tsentru Naukovoho Zabezpechennia APV Kharkivskoi Oblasti (Bulletin of the Center for Scientific Support of the Agribusiness in the Kharkiv Region) (until 2020) and Genetičnì Resursi Roslin (Plant Genetic Resources) issued at the Plant Production Institute named after V.Ya. From 2012 to 2014 - Chief Researcher of the Laboratory of Sunflower Breeding and Genetics of PPI nd.a. V.Ya. Yuriev NAAS. From 2014 to June 2020 - Director of the Institute.

In 2010, he headed the Chair of Genetics, Breeding and Seed Production of KhNAU named after V.V. Dokuchaev (part-time professor of the Chair). Since 2016 - Professor of the Chair of Agrotechnology and Ecology of Petrо Vasylenko National Technical University of Agriculture.

In 2007, he was elected an academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences and a member of the Presidium of the Academy. In the same year, the Presidium of the Academy entrusted him with the coordination of the research program "Oil Crops. Sunflower." Thanks to the successful management of the program, research teams of the PPI, PBGI-NCSCI, IOC created more than 150 hybrids and their parents for different purposes: with various lengths of vegetation, altered composition of fatty acids in oil, resistant to major diseases and tolerant to broomrape. Focus on creating joint hybrids by NAAS institutions chosen by Academician VV Kyrychenko allowed for implementation of scientific achievements of institutes and experimental stations on an area of over 1.5 million hectares in Ukraine and 50 thousand hectares abroad. The organization of seed production in compliance with the European standards in public and private institutions under the supervision of scientists and directly by Academician V.V. Kyrychenko allowed for successful advance in the competitive environment of modern Ukraine.

Being the Chairman of the Specialized Academic Council on the specialty "Agronomy 201", he ensured high-quality training of candidates and doctors of sciences. He personally trained 19 candidates and 7 doctors of science, who work in Ukraine.

He has 530 scientific publications, including 12 monographs, 10 manuals, 20 guidelines and catalogs, 5 books.
